Staying connected in Kosovo

What the coverage maps do not tell you, and what you will actually use the data for.

Where the signal actually drops

Kosovo has two mobile operators, Vala and IPKO, and the plans we track run on them. Pristina, Prizren, Peja and the main roads between them are well covered. Signal gets patchier in the mountains: the Rugova Gorge above Peja and the Sharr mountains around Brezovica are where to expect gaps.

What you will use your phone for here

Day-to-day use is ordinary: maps, WhatsApp (the default way to reach drivers, hosts and family) and intercity bus tickets bought online. Cafe WiFi is everywhere in Pristina, so city stays lean on it. July and August bring a large influx of visiting diaspora, and the networks are at their busiest then.

Before you go

Kosovo is not in the EU, so EU roam-like-at-home rules do not apply and a home SIM from Germany or Switzerland can roam at steep rates. Several Europe-wide eSIM plans also leave Kosovo out of their country list even when they cover Albania and North Macedonia, so check that Kosovo is named before buying a regional plan.

How much data you will actually need

Low to moderate, and lower still if you spend most of the trip with family or in Pristina on WiFi.
