Even if your device supports eSIM hardware, it must be carrier-unlocked to use travel eSIM data packages. If your device is locked, it will reject any eSIM profile you attempt to install.
How to Check Carrier Lock on Apple iOS (iPhone)
Since iOS 14, Apple provides a direct lock indicator inside your settings:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap General, then select About.
- Scroll down to find the Carrier Lock or Network Provider Lock field.
- If it says "No SIM restrictions", your phone is fully unlocked and ready to use eSIMs.
- If it says "SIM Locked", your phone is restricted to your home carrier network.
How to Check Carrier Lock on Android
Unlike iOS, Android does not always have a standardized menu item. Here are the most reliable ways to check:
Method 1: Check Connection Status Settings
- Go to Settings > Connections > Mobile Networks.
- Tap Network Operators.
- Disable "Select automatically". If a list of multiple different networks appears, your phone is likely unlocked.
Method 2: Test with a different Physical SIM card
Borrow a physical SIM card from a friend or family member who uses a different cellular carrier. Insert it into your phone. If you can make calls and load web pages, your phone is carrier-unlocked.
What to do if your phone is carrier locked?
If your phone is carrier locked, you must contact the carrier from whom you purchased the phone. As long as you have paid off your monthly device payment plan or met the contract term requirements (typically 60-90 days), they are legally required to unlock your device free of charge.
